Tonight the new year arrives.
That’s what everyone says.
But where does it actually come from?
Mila wants to be there when it comes. On this page: ChildMumDad - Page 2
Does it come out of the clock?
Mila puts an ear to it.
Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.
“The clock only says when,” says Mama.
“Not where from.”On this page: ChildMum - Page 3
Does it come through the door?
Mila opens it and looks.
Outside there are only the boots,
freezing.On this page: Child - Page 4
Does it come through the window?
There is snow on the window sill.
A bird has hopped along here.
The new year? Still not here.On this page: ChildDad - Page 5
Is it in the wardrobe?
Coats. Boots. A scarf falls on the head.
“Hello?”
Nothing answers.
Only the scarf tickles. On this page: ChildDad - Page 6
Or has it hidden under the sofa?
A little further …
A sock. A cork.
No new year!On this page: ChildMum - Page 7
A break. A doughnut with sugar.
“Maybe it comes when nobody’s looking.”
Mila covers both eyes.
One, two, three … peek.
Only Papa is there. With sugar on his nose.On this page: ChildDad - Page 8
Waiting makes you tired.
“Wake me when it comes,” murmurs Mila.
“Promise,” says Papa.
The hands of the clock creep closer together. On this page: ChildMumDad - Page 9
“Mila! It’s nearly here!”
Eyes open. Hat on. Jacket over.
The blanket comes too.
The hands are almost together.
Quick, onto the balcony! On this page: ChildMumDad - Page 10
Ten, nine, eight … three, two, one:
Happy New Year!
The whole sky lights up.
“And where is it now?” asks Mila.On this page: ChildMumDad - Page 11
Inside it is warm. The hands are over the top.
“Is it here now?”
“Now it’s here,” says Mama.
“But WHERE?”
“Sleep. Tomorrow it will show itself.”On this page: ChildMumDad - Page 12
In the morning everything is still and white.
Fresh snow as far as you can see.
So there it is, the new year:
everywhere. And still brand new.
The first step is for Mila.On this page: ChildMumDad
